Age: 49 years old
Occupation: Domestic Engineer
|What is your athletic background?
I grew up swimming and was an All-American Dlll swimmer in college. After college I was pretty spent and transitioned to occasional jogging, walking, and biking. Over the past 20 years I’ve tried the health club routine, Bikram yoga and other various fitness classes.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
My first experience with CrossFit was when one of my kids was looking for a fitness program. CrossFit Spero had not yet opened so he tried a different local box. I didn’t feel as though he was getting adequate instruction and think he would have gotten injured if he had continued. The atmosphere was intimidating instead of encouraging. CrossFit Spero is warm and inviting which is conducive to my personality. There is competition but it is purely positive and motivating!
When did you start CF?
I did the ramp up in April 2016 and have attended regularly since then.
Why did you choose CF Spero?
CrossFit Spero was recommended by a fitness instructor in a class I was taking. She explained the atmosphere and workout routine; it seemed like a good fit. I was a little bit nervous because I had heard injuries are prevalent in CrossFit. CrossFit Spero instructors make technique a priority for any lifting we do. If I am struggling with a movement, I am told to back off on the weight until I get it right. There is a lot of encouraging instruction taking place.
What keeps you coming back?
The family environment of CrossFit Spero is fantastic. Whatever your fitness level you are part of the family. The workouts remind me a little bit of swimming in that there is a team atmosphere which helps you push through and get the job done.
Why do you live in Oak Park?
I live in Oak Park because of the diverse community, access to the city and good schools.
What do you do for a living?
I like to call myself a domestic engineer! I find the terms ‘homemaker’ and ‘stay at home mom’ demeaning.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I love to travel off the beaten path, bike with friends, garden, and spend time with family.
What do you like about Oak Park?
My favorite thing about Oak Park has to be the people. When in need they have your back!
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
I might have to give you three things if that is ok! I feel a little bit more alive. The high after a tough workout is hard to beat. My lower back doesn’t hurt anymore. My clothes are fitting better. Hmmm…there must be something to this CrossFit thing!
What are your goals for 2016?
I still have to think a lot when doing cleans. I am hoping to make these movements more automatic so I can add more weight. I also want to do two unassisted consecutive pull-ups.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
Do it!!! You will get all of the benefits from CrossFit with the added benefit of surrounding yourself with a great bunch of people! It is difficult but satisfying when you succeed.
What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
My favorite movement is the deadlift. It is simple and fun. Least favorite movement is the box jump. I won’t go into the details on that one!
Whats your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is anything I haven’t cooked!
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
I was doing fitness classes through the Park District of Oak Park. The classes were a combination of circuit training, yoga and pilates.
Would you mind giving a one or two sentence testimonial that we could put on the website?
CrossFit Spero has gone above and beyond the typical box and created a family. Everyone supports each other to reach their utmost potential. You can’t ask for more than that!
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
Thanks for all of the encouragement and camaraderie fellow CrossFit Spero members!!
