|Name: Nahza (AKA Naz) Hanna
Occupation: Full time law student at John Marshall Law School
What is your athletic background?
Not much. I played softball in high school and had gym memberships here and there. In college I started home work out routines including going to the gym and started doing yoga regularly at CorePower.
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Lots of cardio at the gym and yoga whenever I could get to a class. Never had touched a barbell in my life at that point.
How much weight have you lost since you began?
I battle with Hashimoto’s thyroid disease. Loosing pounds is near impossible for me. However, since crossfit I have gained incredible muscle and energy that I never thought I’d be able to do. I have also lost inches and gone down one size in clothes.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
My mom (AKA mighty Mimi) watched the CrossFit segment on 60 minutes and became a true believer of the mission. She would watch how hard I would work out with slim to no results and suggested (pushed) that I try the On-Ramp with her. I am sure glad I did.
When did you start CF?
Started with the introductory workout in 2015 and graduated On-Ramp January of 2016. Which was the first On-Ramp class at the new CF Spero location.
Why did you choose CF Spero?
I initially chose CF Spero because of its location, I continue to choose CF Spero because of the unconditional and genuine support of all the coaches and members there.
What keeps you coming back?
The family at CF Spero is so welcoming and supportive. The atmosphere is friendly and there are no judgements. I can be my unicorn self fall on my butt and get up with a laugh and applause from everyone around me.
Why do you live in Oak Park?
I live in Elmwood Park, neighbor to OP. I like the small town living with the city atmosphere, accessibility to the trains/ busses and the short distance to the loop.
What do you do for a living?
Before law school I worked at a small Real Estate/ Estate Planning law firm as a legal assistant/ clerk.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Free time is very scarce now, any time I have I like to spend at CF Spero or on my couch.
What do you like about Oak Park?
City living in a small friendly town.
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
The battle of Hashimoto’s has gotten easier with consistency at crossfit. I have energy to do normal things I feel stronger, better and more focused than ever. I’m stronger than I ever thought I could be, in fact sometimes I forget how strong I’ve become – intending to just push the printer over on my desk a few inches, I end up pushing the printer off my desk completely.
What are your goals for 2016?
1 strict pull up. My weakness is upper body and right now I can’t do a pull up to save my life.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
Just do it!!! The barbell or the workouts will never be as heavy or difficult as the burden is of never trying.
What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
Squats! Love them as a stretch and as a weighted workout nothing gets the ‘curve and the pop’ we want like squats will! Least favorite…hand stand push ups… wall walks…. anything upside down.
Whats your favorite meal?
Dark chocolate with a cup of coffee. But I also enjoy grilled fish, asparagus, and a spinach salad with apples, goat cheese, walnuts, and balsamic dressing of course with a glass of red wine.
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
I was hopeless when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and even more so when my thyroid became completely non functional, being on artificial hormones for 10 years I never thought I would be able to shed a pound. CrossFit has changed my life forever and has shown me other ways to succeed in my health. I love that CrossFit is a place for everyone no matter of your athletic experience or disabilities. Every coach and member is my motivation to keep pushing and keep coming so a big thank you to everyone at CF Spero!
