Name: Ben Rogerson
Occupation: Post-Production Coordinator / Adjunct Faculty at Columbia College Chicago
What is your athletic background?
I grew up playing sports. Golf and baseball are my favorite. I played high school baseball and continue to play golf, but not as often as I would like. Also, I’ve completed the Chicago Triathlon and Chicago Marathon twice.
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Lots of swimming, treadmills, ellipticals, P90X, and bootcamp classes until I signed up for Foundations at Edgewater CrossFit.
How much weight have you lost since you began?
I lost 10 pounds on Whole30 and during the Nutrition Seminar with Kara. My weight fluctuates, but since I got off my ass more than 10 years ago, I’ve kept the 50 pounds off I lost the first year.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
My local gym closed and I was steered towards Edgewater CrossFit by a fellow member. I wanted something in my hood and I had tried all the other gyms. After Foundations, my first WOD was death by wall balls. I used a 14# ball and made it to 22 minutes. I regretted every wall ball the following day, but I came back; swearing, sweating, and stinking up the joint.
When did you start CF?
Why did you choose CF Spero?
My wife and I had just moved to the hood and I knew commuting to EWCF wasn’t in the cards. I reached out to Dave, then ran into him at Pete’s, and we had a good chat. Here we are a year later.
What keeps you coming back?
Why do you live in Oak Park?
My wife was accepted to Midwestern University in the Fall of 2016 and we decided OP was a good compromise to the city and the full-blown burbs.
What do you do for a living?
I was recently promoted to Post-Production Coordinator in the Cinema and Television Arts Department at Columbia College Chicago. I also teach film editing and a workflow seminar for advanced students.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Reading, writing, exploring, photographing, cooking, eating, and drinking beer.
What do you like about Oak Park?
It reminds me a lot of Andersonville and some other hoods in the City. There are lots of great restaurants, beer bars, a great bookstore and movie theater. Oh, and all those FLW houses are pretty cool.
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
I’ve met a lot of great people.
What are your goals for 2017?
One of the goals I have this year is to string 50 DUs together by 11/1. I’m real GD close. Like 2 away close. If my calves don’t explode from all the practicing, by the time you read this I will have crossed it off the board.
My goal for 2018 is to focus on form, while building strength and endurance.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
Give it a shot. Every day is different. You’ll get stronger. You’ll get healthy. You’ll meet a lot of great people.
What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
I dig the Clean and Jerk, Snatch, and Overhead Squat, but not V-Ups so much.
What’s your favorite meal?
I love tacos, chips, and guacamole. Who wants to go to Cruz Blanca?
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
Thanks for always being supportive especially when I’m pushing through a long cardio intensive WOD.
