Name: Eric Richard
Occupation: Project Analyst
What is your athletic background?
I played a bunch of sports growing up and played baseball and football in high school.
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Since I moved to the Chicago area after college I have had memberships at Planet Fitness and LA Fitness. I always tried to balance my workouts with weights and cardio in some way. All my weight lifting experience came from high school football training. I tried to change that up over the years, but it was the only thing I knew (squats, bench press, cleans, dumbbell work, etc.). When I met my lovely wife, I got more into distance running and high intensity workouts and eventually CrossFit!
How much weight have you lost since you began?
None, if anything I have gained a few pounds, but I can’t totally credit CrossFit for that…
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
I believe it was a free intro class with Dave (and Amy) at the gym. The space wasn’t even built out!. It’s been fun to see the transformation.
When did you start CF?
I believe it’s been almost two years now.
Why did you choose CF Spero?
My wife forced it on me…
What keeps you coming back?
My wife….ha, and the great people. We don’t have any family in the area so CrossFit introduced us to a lot of people we now call friends!
Why do you live in Oak Park?
I don’t. I live in Forest Park!
What do you do for a living?
I’m a Project Analyst for Brailsford & Dunlavey, a national development advisory and program management firm. We specialize in the development of campus life facilities (student housing, recreation centers, student unions, etc).
How do you like to spend your free time?
With my family and friends.
What do you like about Oak Park?
We love Oak Park, but its the larger area that really makes it a great place for people of all ages (Madison Street, Berywn, Riverside, etc.). The location is also very beneficial – close to public transit and the highways. That’s big for us since I work downtown and we travel a decent amount throughout the year going back and forth to Michigan and Indiana.
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
I sleep much better and am rarely tired throughout the day.
What are your goals for 2017?
I’m looking forward to being able to focus on my personal fitness a bit more now that I’m done with grad school. It’s hard to get those PR’s when you can only make it into the gym a few times a week. Maybe I will see my name on the whiteboard sometime this summer!
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
You have to try it for a few months. I tell people this all the time, but it took me a good 6 months before I could say I enjoyed it. You can’t come for a week and decide if it is for you or not. Your not going to even begin to understand all the lifts for a few months. Once you can finally do all the lifts and begin to realize the benefits you start to appreciate the concepts of Crossfit more.
What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
I enjoy any squat movement. I also really like wall balls. I am not a fan of pull ups, mostly because I am terrible at them and they are not kind to shoulders that have been surgically repaired.
Whats your favorite meal?
Pizza! or burgers at Scratch
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
Make it a great day!
