What is your athletic background?

Tall, lanky and uncoordinated is how I would explain my childhood.  I was most comfortable in the swimming pool and bicycle.  Not being naturally coordinated made me not a very competitive person but I did swim on the high school team and road my bike long distances building up endurance more then speed.  Growing up in southern California I enjoyed long distance riding along the coastal bike trail and mountain biking in the hills above the ocean.

What was your workout routine prior to joining Spero Sweat?

Non existent!  Three years before joining Spero Sweat I returned to work after being a stay at home mom for thirteen years.  Returning to work was a huge adjustment for me and my family and one thing I gave up was regular exercise.  I work at a parish center where kind people berng in sweets all the time.  So not only was I not exercising I was snacking more.  I slowly gained 20.  I was heading toward 50 and my doctor said my weight gain, foggy brain, and mood swings were all normal part of premenopause.  I was at a juncture, do I just buy into the idea of my body was in decline and I need to just accept all the uncomfortable changes or do I do something about it?  I turned 50 in July and decided I just did not like how I felt and I did not want to give into feeling bad.

How much weight have you lost since joining?

16 lbs!

What was your first experience with CrossFit?

Spero Sweat class is the only class I have taken.

When did you start Spero Sweat?

September 2017

Why did you choose CF Spero?

In 2016, My friend Janet Larson first told me about Spero and I was excited that there was a CrossFit studio with showers so close to my office and on my way home.  At the time, the On-ramp was held on at specific times and days and it did not work into my schedule, so I dropped the idea but lucky for me I was on their email list.  A year later I received an email about the new class, Spero Sweat was starting up and you did not have to take the On-ramp to take the class.  I was actively looking for classes when I got the email introducing Spero Sweat.  The class was offered at 9:30.  Which means I could work it into my day.  I could go to work check email, then go to class, shower and return to work.  It has been perfect for me to get in a workout without cutting into family time in the evening.

What keeps you coming back?

The amazing progress I have made.  I am stronger, faster, and have more stamina. I have cut almost two minutes off my mile time.

Where do you live and why?

Riverside, why? I fell in love with a house and then my neighbors.  Also I love the river and the wildlife right outside my front door.

What do you do for a living?

Director of Religious Education at Ascension Catholic Parish

How do you like to spend your free time?

Now that it’s summer I enjoy being outside – riding my bike and swimming with my family and friends.  I also love to travel!  My daughter and I are off to Greece this Sunday.

What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting Spero Sweat?

The first side effect of the class was – No more foggy brain!  Also when I first began my knees ached but now that I know how to use and strengthened by large muscles to move, my knees no longer ache when I do lunges or run. I also like the testing we do every few months so we can mark our progress.  I am so proud of my endurance, speed, and weight loss.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining Spero Sweat?

So, so, so great.  Don’t resign yourself to aches, pains, and weight gain of middle life.  Your body is an amazing gift so use and take care of it with heart pumping, strength building, and joyful laughter of the Spero Sweat Class.  Amy has the best laugh, it is contagious.

What’s your favorite and least favorite movements?

Favorite – I honestly don’t have a favorite but my push up and burpees are improving.  Jump Rope, I still have a long way to go to master.

What’s your favorite meal?

I have no absolute favorite food.  I like do cook and I enjoy trying new items at restaurants.

Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?

I am a very proud mom of three teens.   Theo, 16, is a rising junior and Eva,14, a rising freshmen at St. Ignatius.

My son Sean 19, is a sophomore at Vanderbilt and a member of ROTC.  He did the Murph workout with a 50 lb kevlar vest on!  Amazing.
