What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?

I really didn’t have one. Several years before I was really into boxing and more recently I worked with a trainer at a big box gym, but that was a couple years ago. I historically let a lot of excuses keep me from being consistent. I’m done with that mess now though!

How much weight have you lost since you began?16 lbs and counting!

What was your first experience with CrossFit?

When did you start CF?

Technically I started in May of this year, but I think I only came like 5 times after on ramp between May and July. So I like to think of myself starting in August since that’s when I actually started to be consistent.

Why did you choose CF Spero?

Honestly I chose it because it’s in the neighborhood. I kept walking by and seeing all these crazy (yet normal looking) people doing these awesome looking workouts and I got curious. I was really at a point in my life where I decided to own my health and knew I needed to shake things up if I was ever going to get out of my rut of inactivity. Dave had me convinced after our first meeting that Spero would be a good place to do that.

What keeps you coming back?

The community and seeing my own progress. I’d never know that I’m stronger than I think I am if I didn’t have you guys in the trenches with me. I’ve never felt so supported or had so much fun working out. I love my Spero people!

Why do you live in Oak Park?

I got ridiculously cheap rent in a ridiculously nice apartment. It was farther away from work than I wanted, but I’ve come to really appreciate the quiet and the vibe of the neighborhood.

What do you do for a living?

How do you like to spend your free time?

Besides doing CrossFit? I ride horses and am a farmer’s market junkie.

What do you like about Oak Park?

I love the Harrison Street Arts district – I like to hang out at Buzz Cafe, my dog is a patient at PetVets, and of course Spero! And let’s not forget the donuts at the Oak Park farmer’s market – the calories don’t count because they’re sold for charity right?

What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?

Well besides having some awesome new friends, I feel better in my body as I get stronger and leaner. My riding is getting better too! I used to get lower back pain after being on a horse because my core was not strong and I was lacking the leg strength to support myself properly. As I’ve gotten stronger, not only does it feel better to ride, but I’m exerting better control over the horse because I can make my body do what I want it to do.

What are your goals for 2017?

To be able to run a mile without getting completely gassed.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?

The first thing I’d say is don’t be intimidated – Crossfit is NOT just for super athletes and our coaches are incredible and can make any workout doable for you. The second thing I’d say is to just lean in to the process – when you let yourself get supported by the people around you, let go of your judgments about yourself and what you think you can’t do, and just keep showing up, that’s when you start to have fun and see results.

What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?

Favorite is any kind of dead lift – it’s my strongest lift and makes me feel like a boss! Least favorite is running. Definitely running.

Whats your favorite meal?

My favorite healthy meal recently would be grilled salmon with mango salsa – Coach Liz made this during our last Whole 30 and it blew my mind! My other favorite meal that I don’t eat as frequently anymore is Panda Express orange chicken. So bad but sooo good!

Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?

I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am to all of you for your friendship, support and encouragement and how lucky I feel to be part of this tribe. Being around you guys makes me want to be a better, more badass version of myself.
