Client Success Story Questionnaire
Name: Craig Dunphey
Age: 45
Occupation: Stay at home dad, formerly a marketing manager
What is your athletic background?
Played some high school sports and pick-up sports, but never was active at the gym until I got into my later 30s
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Prior to COVID I was active at Boot Camp-type classes at my YMCA in Appleton, WI and had a regular group that helped keep me accountable. As the gyms shut down and we moved from Wisconsin to Illinois my routine faltered. Like many, when COVID was new and we didn’t quite understand what was happening, I was really good at getting after it - running, doing the odd burpee challenge, making up workouts, etc. but the grind and lack of accountability eventually got to me and the work got much less consistent.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
My first experience with CrossFit was also my first experience exercising in a real and committed way. We were in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2016 when our friends who were a DEA family started talking it up one Sunday over several drinks; they were at our house bright and early the next day to get us to the local CrossFit Box, Antares. We were only in Ecuador for about 7 months, but the time at Antares sparked something.
When did you start CF?
I started CF at Spero last summer
Why did you choose CF Spero?
I would jog by it from time to time and it looked clean. I knew that I wanted a gym that would offer challenging and interesting work and I also wanted a gym that would meet me where I’m at fitness-wise, where I would be comfortable. One of the coaches was hanging around the gym when I poked my head in and got me going with the on-boarding.
What keeps you coming back?
The people. The members are great; I love the variety of backgrounds and personalities and how everyone shows up to work. The coaches are pretty awesome too, they know their stuff and are eager to help while also dishing an appropriate amount of snark!
Why do you live in the Oak Park Area?
We moved down for my wife’s work. We had done the big-box store, 3-car garage suburban thing in Appleton and really love living and raising our daughters in such a diverse and walkable community right in the middle of everything.
What do you do for a living?
Mostly laundry
How do you like to spend your free time?
Being outdoors, catching a Cubs game
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
Mentally more engaged, it also really helps me carry all of my groceries into the house in one trip!
What are your goals for 2023?
Get down 5-10 pounds and improve my cardio endurance
What's your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
They all kind of suck when you’re in the thick of it, but there’s something really cool about a good Clean. There’s nothing good about the bike.
What's your favorite meal?
Johnnie’s Double-Dip with Hot and Fries
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
Get started. It can feel intimidating at first, but once you get rolling it’s awesome!
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
Thanks for making me feel welcome!
