Spero means hope.
It is latin.
It comes from my family. My mother's family motto is "Semper Spero"
"ALWAYS HOPE"
A decade ago I opened my gym CROSSFIT SPERO. I did this because I wanted to help deliver hope to everyone I encountered. A few years prior I tried CrossFit and it changed my life.
I was your typical sort of American guy in my mid-30s. Played sports growing up, a bit in college. Left college, got my 9-5(which was really 7-7 and travelling all the time). And my fitness took a back seat so I could be "successful". Whatever that means.
I was overworked, depressed, drinking every day and felt mostly empty.
But once I found CrossFit, I remembered what it was like to feel good again. I bit of hard work and sweat in the morning would set my mood for the rest of the day. I was ready for whatever challenges my work threw at me: clients, coworkers, my employees or my boss.
At least I had DONE SOMETHING FOR ME to start the day.
It was intuitive at first. (At the time I did not know the science behind it) Some tough physical exertion first thing in the morning,
MADE ME FEEL GOOD FOR THE ENTIRE DAY.
But that wasn't the main catalyst for me wanting to open Spero.
It was by watching others succeed and the realm of POSSIBILITIES OPEN UP. That was when I knew I needed to do this. It was the seemingly small successes, like a woman in her 30s getting a pull up for the first time in her life. Something perhaps she never thought she'd be able to do.
You see this light in their eyes. The REALIZATION that their limits are not set in stone. But through hard work and some consistency and the right attitude nearly
ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
There is HOPE for just about anything.
Physical transformations, improved health, better mood, better relationships,
ENJOYING MORE OF LIFE.
It is all right there. And they are in control of it.
It might take time but they could do it.
THE LIMITS OF THEIR BEING EXPAND.
I love helping people. It is my calling
What I was born to do.
There are very few instances in my day where I am not trying to figure out how to help someone feel better. I am selfish about it. Because it brings me so much joy to be LIVING MY PURPOSE, helping others. Giving them a little bit of hope for the day, the week, the year, the rest of their lives.
In the last decade I have been blessed to have had several of my clients moved to tears. We have shared some intimate emotional moments. Maybe they were scared from some health issue, saddened by the way they felt about their bodies or the impact it had on their relationships, they saw a bit of HOPE reversing the lifestyle choices they've made and realized it wasn't too late to make the changes they needed to, the joy of realizing they will look and feel they way they want to on their wedding day. Hell, I've been the first to know more then once when a lady at Spero was expecting a baby. (I mean before their husbands. Cause like they think maybe they are and they don't want the workouts to put them at risk)
It is a special thing as a coach or a trainer when these connections happen. I am BLESSED to have been there for these moments
It is an amazing thing, working on your physical fitness. The benefits cascade into all facets of life.
There is an elevation of your mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.
You see most people compartmentalize everything in their life and make it all separate.
It doesn't work that way. Everything is entwined and related. But physical health and fitness is the foundation.
Once you start working on your physical fitness, everything else improves.
Mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual
Your relationships, with spouses, kids, family, friends, coworkers your community.
You feel good about yourself and become a ROLE MODEL.
Doubt evaporates. Confidence builds.
There is HOPE.
Maybe where it never was, maybe more than before, maybe just a faint glimmer
but it is there.
A better life
A more enjoyed life.
A more capable life.
A more fulfilled life.
