Success Story-Danny DelPurgatorio

Name:  Danny DelPurgatorio

Age: 39

Occupation: Director / Creative Director

What is your athletic background? None

What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero? None

What is your greatest struggle with your fitness routine and how has Spero help you overcome it? I haven’t really had a fitness routine up to this point. I like riding my bike but other than that, I haven’t really done too much in terms of working out. Spero has been great in the sense that it has become my morning routine. The fact that every class is different and I am doing something new every day has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Honestly, I have no idea what I am doing most of the time, but all the coaches (and members) have been diligent in helping correct and push me during each class. One day I won’t need so much attention, I promise

What is the biggest change you’ve seen since starting at Spero? I can actually move around without feeling like I am going to fall apart. Up until recently, all my joints popped and creaked and it was a chore getting out of bed most days. Since starting Spero in April, I literally haven’t noticed any of that. It’s amazing how that works- all those years of people saying “if you exercise and stretch, you will have more energy and your body won’t hurt as bad”. Apparently they knew what they were talking about.

What was your first experience with CrossFit? When I joined Spero!

When did you start CF? In April of this year.

Why did you choose CF Spero? I’ve been driving by the gym on my way to and from work for some time now. I have always been interested in Crossfit, but I’ve been intimidated by the idea of it. After a surgery last year, I decided I wanted to introduce some form of a fitness routine into my life and Spero was the first place that came to mind. After meeting with Dave and talking about my goals, I was definitely sold.

What keeps you coming back? The coaches, the members, and the support. Because I am very new to this, I really like the rigid structure and I need to be pushed. If I was left on my own to work out, it wouldn’t happen. Case in point- the last 38 years of my life.

How do you like to spend your free time? I love to spend as much time with my wife and kids as possible and I really enjoy making movies.

What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF? Way more energy throughout the day and I am definitely not as tired as I used to be.

What are your goals for 2019? I really want to get more fluent with my motions and form. I am still quite wonky when it comes to most of the workouts, but every day I get a smidge better. And hopefully sometime in the near future, I’ll be able to keep up with the rest of the class!

What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF? Do it and don’t think twice. It’s life changing.

What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?

Favorite: I really enjoy rowing.

Least Favorite: I know what’s going on here- if I list something, it will be a part of EVERY class!

What’s your favorite meal? Vegan Pizza (http://thechicagohouseofza.com has legit vegan deep dish pizza and it rules my world)

Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family? Thanks for all of the support and encouragement on this new adventure of mine. This is all very green for me, so I appreciate all of the help!

Success Story-Alisun Cashill

Name: Alisun Cashill

Age: 26

Occupation: Registered Nurse

What is your athletic background?  I ran cross country and did some track back in high school. In my early twenties, I participated in cardio kickboxing and biking/running outside.

What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?  Before beginning CF Spero, I would take the occasional jog outside or on the treadmill. I dabbled a bit in weightlifting but didn’t progress much into it. It’s been a couple of years since I established a workout routine.

What is your greatest struggle with your fitness routine and how has Spero help you overcome it?  My biggest challenge would be pushing myself during a workout, sometimes I would give up too easily and psyche myself out that I am too weak. Spero coaches and the members are so sweet and encouraging. The coaches are always monitoring and assisting when needed. They encourage small, but achievable goals that are safe. If they feel that something is not safe, they will intervene immediately. The coaches are very friendly and easy to talk too.

What is the biggest change you’ve seen since starting at Spero?  I feel like I have more strength in my upper body and my sleep has been a lot better. I don’t feel as fatigue at work when I am running around.

What was your first experience with CrossFit?  Spero was my first experience with CrossFit!

When did you start CF?  I started with Spero CF around April/May.

Why did you choose CF Spero?  The gym is in a nice area and is very clean. The coaches and owner are very friendly and easy to approach. Members of this gym are at different levels of CrossFit which is nice to see because I was intimated by CrossFit at first.

What keeps you coming back?  I really like how I feel after a workout knowing that I pushed through something that I thought I could not achieve. Everyone is so encouraging, and you don’t feel alone. The fact that I feel myself becoming stronger is definitely a plus. What I like about CrossFit is that it is a workout for your whole body.

How do you like to spend your free time?  I like to watch YouTube videos and play video games.

What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?  My sleep has been a lot better; I don’t find myself waking up several times a night. As mentioned previously, my upper body feels stronger, I don’t feel as weak!

What are your goals for 2019?  My goals for 2019 is to complete 10 push-ups that are not modified. It’s been a long time probably since high school that I was able to do one.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?  I would say do it! Find a place that works well for you and become invested. Your body will become stronger and you will also meet a lot of new people!

What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?

Favorite:dead lift

Least Favorite: Power Snatch

What’s your favorite meal?  Mushroom pizza with mozzarella cheese!

Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family? Thank you for being so sweet! I look forward to achieving new goals with you guys!

How has CrossFit influenced your mental health?

CrossFit always pushes me to do more, so I feel good about myself when I’m done. What is probably more important to me, however, is the sense of camaraderie and the feeling of belonging to the Spero family. That makes it easier to get to the gym and take on the WOD.

How has CrossFit impacted your physical health?

CrossFit has made me more body aware in a positive way. I’m certainly more sore all the time, but I also feel better physically.

What positive changes have you noticed in your life since starting CrossFit?

I have more energy. I feel better about myself.

What was your first experience with CrossFit?

OnRamp classes with Coach Amy

November 2017

Why did you choose CF Spero?

Mary Ann and Janet spoke very highly of CrossFit Spero so I signed up for the OnRamp classes. I was hooked after that.

What keeps you coming back?

I like working out with a group of like-minded people. Progress has been slow, but I have improved since starting, and I like the way I feel.

What do you do for a living?

My favorite CF movement is Kettlebell swings and my least favorite is wallballs.

Success Story-Jason Jaffrey

CrossFit Spero - Crossfit Gym In Oak Park

Name: Jason Jaffrey

Age:  Holding on to 45 for just another couple weeks…

Occupation:  Metro Market Sales Manager for GOLF Business Services (Golf Channel)

What is your athletic background? Extremely active growing up – baseball, basketball, martial arts, volleyball (court and sand), and passionate about snowboarding.

What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?   Aside from the occasional park workout and run with Jess, it was sparse, and lacking.  Glad to be back doing CrossFit again.

How much weight have you lost since you began?   About 12 lbs

How has CrossFit influenced your mental health?  It’s certainly an outlet. When I’m in the middle of a tough workout, I find this to be a great place to be mentally.  While I like to joke and have fun, there is a serious side of me that never forgets about other people (there or not) that are fighting tougher battles than just a bunch of burpees or a heavy barbell.  This motivates and humbles me.  Because of this, I am a huge advocate for people to do challenging things, and push themselves to do things they may not have otherwise tried.

How has CrossFit impacted your physical health?  Love to be able to keep up with my kids, and push myself to be a healthier person.

What positive changes have you noticed in your life since starting CrossFit?  Certainly the ability to I am usually more mindful of what I eat.  Usually.

What was your first experience with CrossFit?  Started at a box out in the West Burbs.  One of my favorite memories was my first on-ramping workout; basically some air squats, push ups, and we had to try to handstand against the wall (and try wall walks).  I flailed around, fell on my head, it was humbling of course, but since that day have always loved the variation of movements and workouts.

When did you start CF?  Originally started in late 2012. Took a break, and came back just over a year ago.

Why did you choose CF Spero?  Chose Spero over another box because of the sense of community, coaching, and overall environment.

What keeps you coming back?  The fact that Dave bought 2.5 and 1.25 lb plates. Seriously, they remind me that progress doesn’t always have to be measured 10 or 20 lbs at a time.  From a broader standpoint, I do like that I have seen Spero grow in size with the new location, and grow in other aspects (all the ancillary classes and workshops, added equipment, more Sweat classes, eager to try Ruck and Field, etc).  Of course the people are what make Spero great.  I look forward to forging more friendships while becoming healthier people.

Where do you live and why?   Oak Park.  I love the diversity of OP, and the inherent values that are at the core of the people of OP align with the way I was raised.  Plus, we can get to/from Wrigley Field easily by train.  Go Cubs Go!

What do you do for a living?   I work directly with golf courses to help them connect better with golfers through applying the right solutions (services, technology, etc).

How do you like to spend your free time?  We like to travel and be outside as much as possible.  When I’m not making Jess laugh and roll her eyes at me, I am heavily involved in my boys’ lives and their sports, which is where I spend a lot of my time.

What do you like about Oak Park?  City feel but a slower pace.  Culturally, I like the diversity and how cool people are.

What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?  More mindful of what food, and drinks <sigh>, I put in my body.  Also have become much more educated on self-care, stretching, etc.

What are your CrossFit goals?  Just want to become stronger, fitter, and healthier, while ideally becoming a bit lighter overall.

What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?  CF can be for everyone, because of the scalability of every movement.  Also, you’ll end up with a t-shirt collection that you never thought possible.

What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?  Favorite: Dumbbell snatches.  Not good at them, but strangely like when they’re incorporated into a WOD.  Least Favorite:  Thrusters…those things are disgusting.

What’s your favorite meal?  Sushi – going out for it, and doing homemade rolls, spicy poke, etc.

Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?   I always root for the underdog.  I cheer hardest for the person who might feel shy, or embarrassed or intimidated to walk in to a gym, for whatever reason.  I like to give the thumbs up to the person who is out walking for exercise, because perhaps that’s all they’re able to physically do right now.  CrossFit is a great reminder that everyone deserves a positive and encouraging environment, and simply showing up is half the battle.

What is your athletic background?

For most of my life I have kept all things athletic in the distant background

What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?

Running to catch the Blue Line

How much weight have you lost since you began?

I have lost a significant amount of shame and guilt as well as a pants size. I actually don’t know how much that weighs on the bathroom scale because I’ve decided that number has been distracting me from my primary goal of feeling healthy and strong.
