Success Story-David Nee

David Nee - CrossFit Spero - Crossfit In Oak Park
Name: David Nee
Age: 43
Occupation: Software Developer
What is your athletic background?
Hurling(Irish Field Sport…think Lacrosse) up to mid-teens. Martial arts ( kickboxing, tai chi) and swimming.
What was your workout routine prior to CF Spero?
Was doing the Globo-gym thing on my own and having mediocre success.
How much weight have you lost since you began?
Actually I’ve been trying to gain weight. In my mid-thirties I was carry some extra pounds and managed to loose that mostly through diet (40 lbs). I’ve added about 5lbs since starting Crossfit but also feel like my overall muscle mass is up relative to total body mass.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
I stumbled on the CF Games either on ESPN or YouTube about 3 years ago and was fascinated by the strength and capacity of the athletes. After much stalking of CF content online, I decided to give it a go. (I should not have waited so long)
When did you start CF?
On-Ramp’d at Spero in Jan 2017.
Why did you choose CF Spero?
It looked like a proper CF box to my eye, it’s close by, I reckoned I’d get good coaching there (correct by the way).
What keeps you coming back?
I like it and it’s working for me. Great group of people. I don’t have to do that mental conversation to convince myself to go…I’m genuinely hungry for more every day.
Where do you live and why?
Forest Park…easy city access.
What do you do for a living?
Design Software Solutions for a large financial organization.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Family, dog, projects around the house and of course Crossfit.
What do you like about Oak Park?
It has CF Spero in it!
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CF?
All-round feeling stronger and healthier than I have in a long long time. Very optimistic that I can stay that way as I get older.
What are your goals for 2018?
Rx Murph was one…tick! Next on the list is 100 Unbroken Double Unders, 3 Bar Muscle Ups, 25ft Handstand walk. Outside of that, keep building strength and capacity. Mostly though…stay healthy and keep having fun doing it.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?
Just do it…don’t delay. There is a lot of opinion online but you have to do it to know if it’s for you or not.
What’s your favorite and least favorite CF movement?
I don’t really think of the movements in those terms.
I mostly like the following but with a sprinkling of dislike…Burpees, Wall Balls, Thrusters, KB swings. I like them cause I find them hard so I know when I’m doing them I’m making gains…but they are hard.
I do like the idea of learning a movement that has a skill component to it…e.g. double-unders, Olympic lifts etc. that said, there are not many movements that don’t have a skill component. There’s so much to learn, there is always room for improvement.
Whats your favorite meal?
Meat and two veg!
Anything else you would like to share with the Spero family?
I’m always inspired by the other members to reach new levels of fitness. This was an unexpected benefit of being in the group class setting.
